Five initiatives that are addressing London’s most pressing issues received almost $1 million in grants from London Community Foundation’s Community Vitality Grant program. Funded by LCF’s Community Fund, this program supports high-impact, innovative, and collaborative initiatives that tackle issues identified in the Foundation’s Vital Signs report.

Founded in 1972, the organization, along with its sister corporation Odell-Jalna Residences of London, owns 524 affordable housing units across the city, offering safe, affordable and accessible housing for people in London with lower incomes. As part of the Vision Soho Alliance, Homes Unlimited plans to add 100 more affordable units to its roster with a new building on the old Victoria Hospital lands.
Originally established in 1993 as the Fanshawe Bursary, the Homes Unlimited Memorial Bursary Fund supports tenants, or their children, living at a property operated by Homes Unlimited (London) Inc. or Odell-Jalna Residences of London Ontario with tuition fees for full-time studies at Fanshawe College.

The fund, named the Strong Together fund, will be seeded with an initial gift of $10,000 from LCF. The funds will be directed to the London Muslim Mosque and the Muslim Resource Centre for Social Support and Integration (MRCSSI). All donations will flow directly to these two organizations to support the Muslim community during this difficult time.

People experiencing homelessness in London found it exponentially more difficult and dangerous to access food and shelter. Many people experiencing domestic violence became isolated at home with their abusers. Organizations across the city had to scramble not only to meet health and safety requirements, but also to account for the increased number of community members accessing their services.

The award is usually for $1,000 and funded by the Ken Fleet Choral Conducting Scholarship Fund, but thanks to the amazing generosity of Janet Fleet as well as the Wilson Family Foundation at LCF, this year’s award was increased to two scholarships of $2,000 each. We’re excited to introduce this year’s recipients: Valeska Cabrera and Thomas Burton.

This funding is part of the Government of Canada’s new $31 million Healthy Communities Initiative. This investment by the federal government will support community-led organizations in developing local, small-scale infrastructure projects that respond to the immediate needs arising from COVID-19, while building towards a more pandemic-resilient future.

Read MoreViolence that is committed against women has been called a shadow pandemic, and like COVID-19, gender-based violence is global and deadly. As reported in our latest Vital Signs report, Be the Change, local organizations conservatively estimate a 30% increase in domestic violence cases since April 2020, and many of the cases being reported are noticeably more severe than usual. In addition to fears about the virus, families are experiencing increased stressors that can elevate the risk for violence – such as unemployment, school interruptions and ongoing social isolation. For women who are isolated at home with an abusive partner, the opportunity to get help has been significantly restricted. Support services are needed now more than ever before.

LCF established the Vital People award to address this need and allow local agencies to nominate their employees for a professional development grant of up to $2,000.
